Citizen Kane has a way more well rounded script, characters, concept, and much more. Now that doesn’t mean Casablanca is a bad film Rick and Ilsa are very memorable characters. And story isn’t half bad either. But still, Citizen Kane is still much better.

2001: A Space Odyssey beats both of them by a long shot.

This is an incredibly difficult decision: both Citizen Kane and Casablanca are remarkable in their own ways. Casablanca presents us with the best of us, and Kane presents us with the worst. Despite my adoration for Casablanca, I’m going to go with Kane in the end, simply because it is the better film in acting, cinematography, and writing; not emotion, as it can’t make you laugh and cry in the same way Casablanca can, but technically and dramatically wise, Orson Welles’ magnificent masterpiece is ultimately superior.

Sorry Casablanca, but no matter how much times go by, Orson Welles’ magnum opus will forever remain the king of cinema.
